I put together a beta site that displays the top Google search terms for the days and lets you read news about those different topics. Like I said, it's beta and kind of ugly but hopefully I can add more resources such as photos etc...
Since this is tied to search words and not mainstream news you get a broader perspective of what is going on in the world. Millions sitting home watching Oprah might search on the topics of the current show, and you'll see it!
